Conversation at the lunch counter

Lady Sitting Next to Me: Are you humming?

Me: [pausing, thinks] Yes, I guess I am. I'm sorry, is it bothering you?

Lady: Well, sort of.

Me: Oh, sorry. I do that lately, I don't really know why.

Lady: Probably Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Me: Yeah, probably.

UNbelievable that people have to put a false psychological label on a sign of happiness. She must be quite a sad person.

You're cool.

No way. (Insert open-mouthed, wide eyed emoticon here)

I think this says more about her than it does about you.

Next time anyone asks you that, answer "No, you must be imagining it"

geez

"No, just trying to drown out your obvious disapproval - do you always have this effect on people? You must be very unpopular. And you really need to do something about that wart on your nose."

Terry, I have no idea! ha.
The woman went on to tell me about how her hubby picks at scabs. I asked her if she was a shrink, and she said no. We talked for a while and it turned out she was from the same town in Michigan as where I lived before moving to FL. When she left, the waitress asked me what on earth I'd said to make her laugh, b/c she was a regular who comes in once a week; eats a cup of soup; and never smiles or talks to anyone. So there you go. People are funny! I may be OCD but I'm not sure if her elevator went all the way up ;).

I'm with Sandy.....in fact why don't you learn ventriloquism (is that a word?!) and then let them wonder about the voices;-)
